Graphic Design is not website (User Interface) design and it is dangerous at worst and unwise at best to think it is. Graphic Design is the positioning of pictures and text on paper. Website design uses this facet of design, but it incorporates so much more. Everyone knows the joke about the dumb blonde, but no one wants their business website to be of a similar ilk, do they?

The part about design which is perhaps not so obvious is the 'back-end' part. To make your business work effectively means maximizing the contribution of the computer chip and minimizing the efforts of people.

All designs are technical. It is not possible to view anything in a browser without a solid, technical foundation. Whether it be a server-based solution, or client-based one, or a combination of the two we are able to provide technical services.

Sometimes the technical side is invisible to the end user; sometimes it allows them to enjoy a richer, easier experience on the site. Whatever the needs may be, they can be met using readily available, standard technologies.

An example of technical usage is something like this : a client wanted an animated, random-coloured background. Their designer had proposed an animated gif (which is not random) or Flash. The Flash gave them a lot of control, perhaps too much, but it came with all the problems of Flash. We wrote three lines of code and it provided exactly what they wanted. No animated gifs, no Flash, no overhead with production of external files. It just worked. That was simple.

A more complex one was sorting bookings for 1,000,000 hotel rooms instantly and making the solution available for 20,000 hotels. That is a big job, and more noughts than we can count! However, the solution takes real time data and provides availability instantly for any type of conceivable booking.

Another solution has allowed the client to save 10,000 hours of labour in the first three years. The initial project cost £1500. A pleasing technical solution to an expensive, time-consuming problem.

Another example was the sorting and de-duping of email lists. The client, a PR business, was spending thirty (long) minutes each day sorting email for PR purposes, according to a complex set of codes. Our solution does it in one quarter of a second. Over a year it saves them over one hundred (100) hours -- nearly two and a half weeks of labour. You understand our concept of saving now.

There is something interesting about this site. It is all completely standard HTML and Javascript code. There is nothing special about it. Some clients have asked if we have used any special technologies to make it work. The answer is 'No'.

This demonstrates the problem, nowadays : with web technologies, they are so prolific and wear so many different guises that it is almost impossible to know what one is looking at unless one is actually the person who built it, or someone who has a deep knowledge of the prevailing technologies.

All our code is commented, so that anyone can read and understand what it does, as long as they have a basic understanding of coding.

The web (and the code that runs it) is a marvellous thing. It is marvellous because it allows us to access some of the best skills in the marketplace, transparently and seemlessly, so that any specialist skills can be brought to bear on any project. We have utilized personnel from four continents in past projects and only two of those businesses have a physical office. Today this means you get the expertise you need without the associated overheads.

Q Is P2Design a specialist web design business?
Yes, P2Design is a specialist. If you want paperwork and cards and suchlike we don't do these things. You wouldn't ask a dog to be a cat after all would you. We do website design. That is all. However, if you would like someone to handle the design of paper-oriented media we are more than happy to recommend some designers.

Q Can P2Design guarantee to make my site the best on the web for my type of business?
This is not a question with a real answer because the web is an ever-changing and evolving environment.

Q Does P2Design do Search Engine Optimisation when constructing a site?
Yes. Google, the principal Search Engine, now uses a different technique for delivering results, which means that every user gets a unique set of results that are tailored to the individual machine (and user). This makes old perceptions of Search Engine Optimisation largely misplaced at best, and misleading at worst. In short all websites are built with Search Engines in mind, so if you want something that can be found you can rely on us to do it.

Q How many websites does P2Design create a year?
Ideally we handle four to five main sites a year; but we handle other code work in addition to that.

Q Does P2Design's list of companies using their work mean anything?
No. It means nothing. You would be well-advised to judge us on our ability to assist you, not by looking at a list of others who have used or are using our services.

To do that, of course, you will firstly need to contact us, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Things we know and you should too (only read this paragraph if you are interested in how things work) : as with all complex pieces of software there are a few trifling issues. With the P2Design site, because of the way in which the History works, all Safari browsers (built on the WebKit engine) do not put iframes into the browser's History, so when the back button is pressed you leave the site. None of the other major browsers have this shortcoming.

We don't recommend any particular type of browser, particularly to avoid small issues such as this, because all browsers have issues of one sort or another. We left this particular idiosyncracy in the site so that you are able to see that when making websites that are unique in look and funtionality there are potential concerns which need to be taken into account. If you are planning a commercial site we don't recommend that you engage in a strategy prone to such issues. For demonstration purposes, however, you can see for yourself that it is not critical, but it is something of which to be aware.

As far as we are concerned as individuals we are strictly old fashioned. Some might say we are Victorian in terms of rigour. This means that all the small details, which so many others choose to sweep aside, as if they were not important, get checked. Be prepared for attention to detail when engaging P2Design. Only when the work is done to our standards is it released. Is there an example I can see of this attention to detail? Yes, of course. The page you are looking at does not allow you to select the text and the cursor does not change to an I-beam when over the text. The website can also be navigated using the Arrow Keys on your keyboard. Small things which cost no more to do.

Finally, it might just be worth mentioning that is important to us, where possible, to establish long term relationships. Most of our clients we have known for years. It is for this reason you will notice an absence of endless, bullet-pointed lists of meaningless marketing-speak and techno-talk. They are not necessary when trusted parties do business. Things just work. Full stop.

It is difficult to stress too strongly the importance of good copy on any website. Any mistakes are punished regularly, thoroughly, forcibly and expensively.

The problem is that until it is done professionally it is difficult to see how expensive those mistakes are for your business. The reason is simply that even if your target audience doesn't understand the finer points of marketing copy, subconsciously they respond. Unfortunately, they respond by not spending any time or money, if the copy is poor. You do not want that to happen to your site. Do you? Please beware of design agencies which purport to have expertise in this area : most don't. Grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and poor use of tenses are all straightforward indicators of a lack of expertise or just a lack of interest in your business's message. We wouldn't want anyone to be a victim of such things, when it is so important to get it right.

We are able to ensure the copy is correctly written, structured and gets your message across effectively. Every minute that is spent working on good copy is like money in the bank. It pays for itself time and time again, and of course, when analysed it is very easy to see why : people like good, clear information.

If it were possible we would make a machine do the copywriting -- or as one agency wrote it -- copyrighting(!) -- however, it remains a purely human task. We have been doing it for fifteen years.

This means your site's visitors respond consistently and predictably -- well, almost. Nothing, after all, is guaranteed to work perfectly by converting every visitor into a customer!
